Evaluation of membrane quality using EELS analysis method

EELS analysis for element identification allows for the comparison of the bonding states of materials!

Our company provides analysis and reliability evaluation services. EELS analysis and EDS analysis are analytical methods used for elemental identification by irradiating accelerated electrons onto TEM samples. In the case of "different carbon films," we conducted film quality evaluation in the nanoscale using the EELS analysis method, which is characterized by state analysis. In the EDS analysis, we detected trace amounts of N and O only in the Bottom film through spectral comparison. In the EELS analysis, the difference in the shoulder shapes of the two spectra allows for a comparison of the bonding states of N, O, and C present in the organic film. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Example of analysis of compounds at the SAC solder and Ni pad interface.

It is also possible to display various maps of each phase! Analysis is based on the information of the crystal structure possessed by the sample.

We will introduce an example of the analysis of compounds formed at the interface between Sn-Ag-Cu solder and NiP pads. At the interface between NiP pads and Sn-Ag-Cu solder, compounds such as (Ni,Cu)3Sn4 and (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 grow, and surface analysis using EDX shows the distribution of Ni, Cu, and Sn within these compounds. The EBSD method is an analytical technique based on the crystallographic information of the sample. By combining it with elemental analysis using EDX, it is possible to estimate the composition, and in some cases, analysis can be performed using the crystallographic data of Ni3Sn4 and Cu6Sn5 as substitutes. [Summary] < Elemental Analysis by EDX > - Surface analysis shows the distribution of Ni, Cu, and Sn within the compounds. < Crystallographic Orientation Analysis by EBSD > - By combining this with elemental analysis using EDX, it is possible to estimate the composition. - In some cases, analysis can be performed using the crystallographic data of Ni3Sn4 and Cu6Sn5 as substitutes. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

[Analysis Case] Elemental Analysis of Active Materials in Lithium-Ion Secondary Batteries

Dismantling and sampling can be performed in a non-exposed atmospheric environment, allowing for measurements that minimize degradation and alteration.

In AES (Auger Electron Spectroscopy), it is possible to perform elemental mapping (surface analysis) at sub-micron levels, allowing for clear confirmation of the elemental distribution in ternary materials (Co, Mn, Ni). Additionally, the distribution of carbon derived from binders and conductive additives can be measured with high sensitivity. In this study, a series of processes for the positive electrode active material were conducted in an atmosphere-free environment (inert gas atmosphere) until the introduction of the equipment, minimizing alterations during measurement. As a result, it was suggested that larger particles are LiCoO2, while smaller particles are LiCoxMnyNizO2 and LiMn2O4, indicating a non-uniform distribution of particles. Measurement methods: AES・SEM Product field: Secondary batteries Analysis purpose: Composition evaluation, identification, composition distribution evaluation For more details, please download the materials or contact us.

[Analysis Case] Evaluation of Surface Metal Contamination in Plastic Containers

Evaluation of the composition and distribution of impurities in polymer materials using XRF.

XRF is an analytical method used to evaluate the composition and distribution of constituent elements. A notable feature is that it does not require any special pretreatment for measurements, and it can be performed non-destructively over a wide range from 1.2 mm to several centimeters. As an example of elemental analysis using XRF, we will introduce a case where measurements were conducted focusing on the metal components contained in polymer materials of chemical storage containers, investigating metal contamination that adhered to the container surface during the storage period.

[Analysis Case] Evaluation of the Fracture Surface of Laminated Samples by AES Analysis

Visualizing a 50nm thin film with a cross-sectional sample.

AES analysis is a method for obtaining compositional information from the surface to a depth of several nanometers. By performing AES measurements on the cross-section of a sample to obtain elemental distribution images, it is possible to clearly evaluate the layered structure. In addition to evaluating layered structures and conducting elemental analysis of the inner walls of trenches and holes, combining mechanical processing and ion beam processing allows for the assessment of thin alloy layers and phenomena such as diffusion and segregation of elements. In this case, we will present data evaluated using AES analysis for a thin film deposited on a silicon substrate.

[Analysis Case] Evaluation of Cu Surface Discoloration Using AES and SEM-EDX

It is possible to perform elemental analysis with a shallow detection depth while conducting SEM observation.

SEM-EDX analysis and AES analysis are suitable for simple investigations of discoloration and foreign substances on metal surfaces. However, when the discoloration or foreign substances are thin or small, AES analysis, which provides information from very shallow areas of the surface (about 4-5 nm), is effective. The AES equipment owned by MST can acquire SEM images, allowing AES analysis to be conducted while confirming the areas of interest using SEM images. In this case study, we will present data comparing the evaluation of discoloration on the Cu surface using AES analysis and SEM-EDX analysis. Additionally, we will also present the results of AES depth direction analysis.

Elemental analysis equipment corresponding to the guidelines for elemental impurities in pharmaceuticals.

Analytical instruments for evaluating impurity elements, ICP-MS and ICP-OES.

This application note introduces the analytical devices necessary to comply with the elemental impurity guidelines for pharmaceuticals issued by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare on September 30, 2015. The Q3D metal elemental impurities are stated to apply to new pharmaceuticals for which approval applications are submitted on or after April 1, 2017, according to this guideline. ICH Q3D establishes a risk-based assessment method to identify and evaluate elemental impurities in formulations and to set management methods. This assessment is required not only for potential elemental impurities in the formulation itself but also for potential elemental impurities that may be introduced from each component of the formulation (active pharmaceutical ingredients, excipients, container closure systems).

[Analysis Case] Elemental Analysis of Wire Bonding Interface

By using a combination of processing, elemental analysis of the interface is possible.

AES analysis is a method for obtaining compositional information and elemental distribution at the very surface (to a depth of a few nanometers). By combining it with cross-sectional processing, similar information can also be obtained within layered structures and at structural interfaces. This allows for the evaluation of alloy layers, elemental diffusion, and segregation, making it effective for failure analysis and defect investigation of devices. Below, we present a case where a cross-section was prepared using IP processing to evaluate the state near the bonding interface of wire bonding, followed by assessment through AES analysis.
